Penalties Overview
To ensure compliance with our code of conduct and to maintain a professional and respectful environment, the Australian Police Force implements a structured penalty system for violations. This section provides a detailed overview of the penalties applied for different types of conduct breaches.
Termination
Definition: Complete removal from the Australian Police Force.
Application: Reserved for the most severe violations, including corruption, excessive use causing bodily harm, and serious abuse of power. Termination is an irreversible action indicating that the individual's conduct is fundamentally incompatible with the values and responsibilities of the force.
Suspension
Definition: Temporary removal from the Australian Police Force for a defined period of time.
Application: Applied in cases of significant policy breaches, abuse of power, or repeated conduct violations. The length of suspension is determined based on the severity of the offense and the individual’s history of conduct violations.
Strike
Definition: A formal warning for an action, which is logged in the member's record. Accumulation of three strikes will escalate to a more severe punishment.
Application: Strikes serve as a deterrent for minor to moderate offenses, allowing individuals an opportunity to correct their behavior while being mindful of the consequences of repeated violations.
Verbal Warning
Definition: An informal warning for an action, without it being logged.
Application: Given for minor infractions or first-time offenses as an immediate response to correct behavior. Verbal warnings are a tool for supervisors to address issues promptly without formal disciplinary action, encouraging a culture of immediate feedback and correction.
