Conducting traffic stops is a normal duty officers must partake in when on shift. Officers may pull over a vehicle for the following reasons.

  1. Speeding: Exceeding the speed limit or driving too fast for the conditions.

  2. Suspected DUI: Erratic driving patterns suggesting impairment by alcohol or drugs.

  3. Vehicle Defects: Visible defects like broken lights, excessive smoke, or missing plates.

  4. Registration Issues: Expired or invalid vehicle registration.

  5. Traffic Violations: Running red lights, failure to stop at stop signs or unsafe lane changes.

  6. Random Breath Tests: Routine checks for alcohol consumption.

Any other reason may be classified as an illegal traffic stop, which may result in punishment from the HR team.

Please follow the steps below for the correct way to conduct a traffic stop within AURP.

You must identify yourself as the vehicle driver at the start of each traffic stop.

Example

G'day! I'm Chief Commissioner XP with the Australian Police Force. Do you have any reason why you have been stopped today?

We also recommend you ask why they think they have been pulled over. This can result in a confession that can help later in the process.

After you have finished with Step 1, you must ask for their current driver's license and registration of the vehicle.

Example

May I see your license and registration?

After receiving both copies, please return to your vehicle, saying something like, "Just hang tight for me."

Run both the driver and vehicle through the MDT. If you find anything suspicious, call for backup and wait for further action.

Skip this section if you are not giving them a fine.

Whilst remaining in your car, start to write the infraction notice. The driving offence must be taken down, as well as the punishment. This can be found in Driving Offences. Use the command, /infringement-notice in APF and follow the instructions.

When done, it will be posted in the Infringement Notice log channel.

You can either let them off with a warning or a fine when finishing.

Fine

We recommend you say something along these lines:

Your infringement notice will arrive via the mail in 2-3 business days. You may also view it on the APF Communications server at any time.

Fill in each section as required
