Patrol Guide

Welcome to the Australian Police Force. This page is designed to help officers patrol for their first time, with the rules and regulations that a General Duties officer should follow whilst on duty.

Pre-Patrol Preparation

  1. Ensure you have all necessary equipment, including your badge, radio, firearm, handcuffs, flashlight, and body armour. Double-check that all items are in working condition.

  2. Ensure the lights, siren, and radio are functioning on your vehicle. Check the fuel level and ensure the vehicle is clean and ready for duty.

  3. Start your shift in the APF discord.

You must request a callsign from the #callsign-request channel on the discord before going on patrol for the first time.

During Patrol

  1. Stay visible in the community. Regular visibility helps deter criminal activity and assures the public of their safety.

  2. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watch for suspicious activities, vehicles, or individuals.

  3. Interact with residents and business owners. Building trust and rapport with the community aids in gathering valuable information and increases cooperation.

  4. Prioritize calls based on urgency. Use lights and sirens appropriately and follow safe driving practices when responding.

  5. Follow department protocol for vehicle and pedestrian stops. Ensure you clearly communicate the reason for the stop and conduct yourself professionally and respectfully.

Read Conducting Traffic Stopsfor more information.

  1. Regularly check your Mobile Data Terminal (MDT) for Be On the Look Out (BOLO) alerts. Staying updated on these alerts helps you identify suspicious vehicles and wanted suspects.

  2. Coordinate with other law enforcement agencies such as HWP and AFP to help with crime scenes, help locate individuals, etc. General Duties do not have the training that other departments have.

IMPORTANT: READ Radio Codes

Post-Patrol Debriefing

  1. Ensure all equipment is accounted for and securely stored. Report any damages or issues.

  2. Refuel if necessary and report any damages or maintenance needs for the patrol vehicle.

  3. Make sure your shift is OFF in the APF discord.

Remember, your primary role as a patrol officer is to protect and serve. Your commitment to professionalism, respect, and diligence will make a significant difference in the lives of the community members you serve. Stay safe out there.
